Have you been following the unfolding saga of the 'Big 3 Carmakers Bailout' in the US? I haven't been following it that closely, and I don't pretend to understand all the intricacies of the situation, but every so often an aspect of the story comes out that I just can't believe.
Right from the beginning of this mess I found it hard that the government would even consider bailing out failing companies. I believe in funding LIFE, instead of LIFE SUPPORT, and if a business can't make it on the free market then perhaps it shouldn't make it. I think the best thing a government can do is provide an even playing field and a safe environment for business to thrive. And those that are operated well, will do well, and those that are run by fools will quickly not run.
Now in this particular situation, I understand the rationale for considering a bailout is because there are 1000's of jobs tied to these 3 companies and should they fail, the economic repercussions would be staggering. So to try and avoid an economic nightmare, the government is considering giving A LOT of money to people who have shown they can't manage their money -- sounds like a great idea right?
Well, just as it was looking like some money might be available for these failing businesses, it seems like the whole deal is in jeopardy because the
unions are unwilling to make some wage concessions. Again, please pardon my 'economic naivety' but ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Why do the unions even have a say in this? From where I sit this is a very simple question to answer:
"Would you like to have a job at this wage, or no job at all?"
I'm not suggesting that the entire financial mess should be borne by the unionized employees. There probably needs to be a lot of adjustments made throughout the entire industry, and at every level. After all, if it was working it wouldn't be in this mess would it?
I don't understand the unwillingness of these individuals to make some wage concessions and what's even more confusing is why they have any say at all?
I'm going to watch
The Office. At least that workplace ineptitude is funny.
